Doesn't Add Up: training to be a secondary maths teacher

Welcome to my experiences training to be a secondary maths teacher.  It didn't work out for me, despite my best efforts. It's a hard job with unreasonable working conditions.  Congratulations to those who stayed the course - good luck, because you will need  it.

 

Lots of things didn't add up. It might be my age - I am in my fifties and a lot has changed since when I was at school - but so many things were very strange.  On paper, though, I should have been well suited to teach maths. I liked the subject, having studied it university and I had a lot of experience as a private tutor.

 

So, what went wrong? Well, there was just so much nonsense. I liked maths at school. So did my friends. But, I had to teach classes where no one like it. They didn't want to be there and didn't want to learn. And
